Dive in to the history of Major League soccer with this brief guide to the past and future of MLS. From the 1994 World Cup to welcoming St Louis FC in 2023 and the seminal new broadcast deal with Apple TV +, this video covers the lot (briefly!). Major League Soccer's history began in 1988 when the United States Soccer Federation agreed to establish a Division 1 professional soccer league in exchange for FIFA giving the United States the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In 1995, Major League Soccer was formally established. The league had 10 teams when it first started in 1996, and by 1998 it had 12 teams. The league lost money in its early years, which led to two teams dissolving following the 2001 season as a result of the challenges MLS had in its first few seasons (more on these in future videos!). Since then, the MLS has recovered thanks to rising attendance and the construction of stadiums tailored specifically for soccer. MLS has the third-highest average attendance of any sports league in the world, drawing more over 20,000 spectators per game on average.
