Title: Neurosurgical Applications of Movie-fMRI. Session: Symposia Speaker: Yanmei Tie Abstract: Clinical fMRI for neurosurgery is designed to identify eloquent brain areas such as motor and language functional networks. The motivation for developing naturalistic fMRI for neurosurgical brain mapping is two-folds. First, task-based fMRI may be difficult for patients to perform, potentially leading to invalid mapping results. Second, emotional health is often at risk in neurosurgical patients, leading to an unmet need for mapping emotional networks in order to preserve/improve patients' post-surgical quality of life. In my talk, I will first present our work developing a movie-fMRI paradigm for language mapping in healthy individuals and neurosurgical patients. Our results in 22 healthy subjects and 34 brain tumor patients demonstrate that the language network can be mapped at the individual level using movie-fMRI, with high sensitivity and specificity. At the group level, our data-driven analyses reveal spatiotemporally distinct emotional salience and language networks, supporting the notion that these different functional brain networks associated with neural processing of different movie features can be resolved from movie-fMRI. I will conclude my talk by discussing future directions to fully leverage this promising naturalistic fMRI for neurosurgical brain mapping.
