Students who have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences often exhibit behavioral challenges and/or struggle academically. As a result, schools and districts increasingly need to address student’s social and emotional learning through interventions, curriculum, and alternative discipline measures. Keynote speaker Dr. Cassie Yackley presented research on the effects of poverty, stress, and violence on children’s social, emotional, and behavioral development; school climate; and student academic performance. Excerpt 2. The Role of Relationships in Stress Regulation: Dr. Yackley explains that the human stress response system is modulated by relationships.
