In the 1920s, Sekinchan was a small fishing village while the main fishing area is Bagan. In history, Sekinchan's original name is Sungai Sekinchang. The early inhabitants were almost all Teow Chew fishermen who depended on fishing for their daily livelihood. Apart from being a lively fishing village, Sekinchan is one of the major rice producing areas of Malaysia. The vast, well-irrigated and organized paddy fields around here produces one of the highest yields of rice in the country. Its location on the flat and uninterrupted plains allow it to be the "Rice bowl of Selangor."
