Surf fishing a remote stretch of the New Zealand coastline in near-perfect conditions, with calm seas, blue skies, and plenty of action. This video marks my first surfcasting session down in South Canterbury on the channel. Fishing alongside a few friends, we hit a busy bite window with multiple rods bending at once, making for a lively session on the beach. Along the way, a surprise fish turned up - my first ever gurnard from this part of the coast - something I’d never caught here before despite many trips over the years. On the second day, I checked out the Waitaki River mouth looking for kahawai. With the river running high and dirty, the fishing wasn’t ideal, but a quick drone flight showed small pockets of fish sitting well outside casting range, around 200 metres out. There’s also plenty of drone footage throughout the session, showing just how good the conditions were, along with the quieter moments that come with surf fishing remote beaches. Thanks for watching.
