The Power of Love and Money

In the context of COVID-19, we investigated whether parental financial and family emotional support mitigates the negative financial impact on young adults. Framed in the Conservation of Resources Theory of stress and coping, we conceptualized emotional support and financial support as family resources that may offset the negative financial impact of COVID-19 on the financial wellbeing and positive outlook of young adults. We analyzed online survey data collected between July - September 2020 from young adults (N=2,102; aged 18-30) living in six countries (China, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovenia, US). Overall, family emotional support appeared to offer some benefit. This was not the case for parental financial support.
