London Coliseum, 1986 Ariodante, a foreign knight seeking adventure, has fallen deeply in love with Ginevra, the daughter of the King of Scotland. Ginevra returns his affection and has pledged herself to him. Their happiness, however, provokes the jealousy of Polinesso, the ambitious Duke of Albany, who covets both the throne and Ginevra. Determined to undermine Ariodante and advance his own schemes, Polinesso exploits the devotion of Dalinda, Ginevra’s lady-in-waiting. Dalinda is hopelessly infatuated with him, even as she is pursued by Lurcanio, Ariodante’s brother, whose affection she does not know how to receive. Manipulating Dalinda’s feelings, Polinesso draws her into a plot designed to destroy Ariodante’s honor and clear his own path to power.
