Composed by Martin Evans. Orchestra: BBC National Orchestra of Wales Conductor: Jac van Steen Date: Friday 13th February 2026 Venue: BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff CF10 5AL Seeing the Light is an orchestral adventure depicting the ongoing journey of self-discovery and conscious awareness that I pursue as a human being, both on a personal and creative level. It encompasses the exploration of the unfamiliar and the confronting of internal barriers, as well as the embracing of mindfulness and acceptance of life's inherent unpredictability. Ultimately, it aims to foster a sense of purpose and authentic living that transcends external expectations. Structurally, the piece is organised into two main sections interconnected by recurring themes and motifs. Presented across various instruments, these are often disguised using subtle alterations in rhythm or timing. The first half symbolizes the process of discovery, embodying the struggle with the new and unfamiliar, along with the uncertainties that accompany this experience. By incorporating occasional soft dissonances within a predominantly 7/8 time-signature, it conveys feelings of doubt and instability. However, amidst this irregular rhythm, a thread of continuity emerges as deeper understanding starts to form. The second half represents the stage of self-awareness and realization during which one can feel a sense of understanding and progress. It is characterized by more stable time-signatures compared to the first half and features a subtle interplay between simple and compound rhythms to bring a gentle undercurrent of "pull and sway" for enhancing the music's dynamism and engagement. 2 Flutes (2nd Piccolo) 1 Oboe 1 Cor anglais 1 Clarinet in B flat 1 Bass clarinet in B flat 2 Bassoons 4 Horns in F 2 Trumpets in B flat 2 Tenor Trombones 1 Bass Trombone 1 Tuba Percussion 1: Snare drum, Glockenspiel, Suspended Cymbal, Tam tam, Triangle Percussion 2: Vibraphone, Claves, Suspended Cymbal 1 Harp Violin I (12 - 14) Violin II (10 - 12) Viola (8 - 10) Violincello (6 - 8) Double Bass (4 - 6) COPYRIGHT (Composition): All rights remain with the composer, Martin Evans.
