Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) goal is to reduce the size of the cleft within the lip, gum and nose, before surgical repair. NAM begins within the first few weeks that your baby is born and continues until your child is ready for cleft lip repair. Depending on how severe your child's cleft is, the NAM will be adjusted by your team's pediatric dentist over the course of 3-6 months. This will guide your child's natural growth to gradually bring their segments closer together. NAM takes a lot of commitment and teamwork from providers, parents and families. During this process you become an important part of your child's care team by keeping the areas clean and changing medical tape daily. By the end of treatment, the appliance is removed since it is no longer needed and the nose is aligned to be more symmetrical. The gradual process of bringing the lip and gum together prepares the lips, gum and palate for surgical repair. The next step after lip repair is cleft palate repair, which is performed by your child's plastic surgeon. Patients who undergo NAM tend to have better results when it comes time for surgical repair. Our team will teach you how to properly care for NAM and will answer any questions you may have.
