Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Use the Equation Editor in Excel Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast. In this episode, we will be diving into chapter 28 of our Excel In Depth series, where we will be exploring the powerful Equation Editor feature in Excel 2010. The Equation Editor can be found on the Insert tab, in the Symbols group. However, I have added it to my Quick Access Toolbar for easy access. When you open the Equation Editor, you will see a variety of pre-built equations, but the real magic happens when you choose "Insert New Equation" at the bottom of the list. But before we can insert a new equation, we need to have a drawing object on our sheet. So let's go to the Insert tab and choose Shapes. I'll draw a simple shape and then change it so it's not filled in. Now, we can go back to the Equation Editor and choose "Insert New Equation" at the bottom. This will bring up a gallery of symbols and structures that we can use to build our equation. One thing to note is that when you choose a structure, such as a fraction or integral, you will see three boxes highlighted. You will need to click inside these boxes in order to type your equation. And don't worry if you're not a math whiz, the Equation Editor has a variety of symbols and structures to choose from, making it easy to create complex equations. I've also noticed that when working with fractions, it can be helpful to build the equation as a Linear equation first, then change it to a Professional equation. This will ensure that the fractions are displayed correctly. Overall, the Equation Editor is a powerful tool for displaying equations in Excel, and it's a feature that was originally added to Word 2007 and later added to Excel 2010. I hope you found this episode helpful and that it will make the scientists, engineers, and mathematicians out there happy to have this powerful tool at their disposal.
