BMAC stands for Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate. “It's utilizing the body's own healing properties to heal itself,” said Musculoskeletal radiologist Dr. Jamal Ksar. It’s essentially stem cell therapy that can help reduce inflammation. “We generally use it for people with arthritis and major joints, typically the knee or the hip, sometimes the shoulder,” said Dr. Ksar. Doctors use imaging to collect bone marrow. “We use CT to get a clear picture of your pelvic bone, and we can see precisely where to insert a needle to aspirate bone marrow. Then we concentrate that bone marrow in a similar fashion in a centrifuge, and then we take that concentrated bone marrow, which is rich with stem cells, and can inject that into a joint,” said Dr. Ksar. He’s seen positive results in patients of all ages. “W 've seen powerful anti-inflammatory outcomes from these injections where people have been able to return to normal activities of daily living all the way to returning to professional sport.” BMAC and Platelet Rich Plasma injections are offered at Lee Health’s Florida Radiology locations. Ask your doctor if they may be right for you.
