PLOT – Ineluctable modality of the visible: at least that if no more, thought through my eyes: This is the one that breaks most people, but really, it is just Dedalus strolling on the strand on his way to his next appointment, thinking in a stream of consciousness. He thinks about the class he just had. He imagines what it would be like to be blind, using his stick to tap his way along for a bit. He thinks about his time in Paris, and about his mother and her death. He has a think about Ireland’s relationship with Britain, and the world in general. He imagines visiting friends. He regrets who he has been, and his own priggishness about all. Throughout, he plays with the sounds of words, and neologisms, and tinkers with the idea of writing a poem ODDS & ENDS Dedalus is the quintessential modernist here, incapable of originality, and trapped by the ideas of others that occupy his mind. He quotes poets and writers endlessly, never feeling a true faith in his own abilities. He plays the intellectual, and he delves into ideas that sound important and deep. However, throughout, he irritates himself, with his constant voices, his need to be deep, his idea of being a poet – he doesn’t have a kind description to give himself. As before, Hamlet becomes inescapable for him. Is Ireland the Kingdom of Denmark for him – Laertes came back from Paris too. We see Ibsen and Wilde referenced, and possible hinted suggestions that maybe Dedalus flirted with the idea of being in an intense same sex relationship – Cranly from A Portrait… with whom this seems most likely, shows up yet again in Ulysses at this point. -Remember you epiphanies on… Joyce even mocks himself directly for his epiphanies – now published. He also summons ideas of pieces from other of his works, the Pigeonhouse is a reference to the Dubliners story, An Encounter The last line … He turned his face over a shoulder … suggests once more the Odyssey, and Telemachus waiting for some sure sign of his father’s ship Selected Sources Ulysses, by James Joyce Romping Through Ulysses, from At It Again www.ulyssesguide.com www.joyceproject.com Music in this video Song: Love's Old Sweet Song Artist: John McCormack Album: The Legendary John McCormack Licensed to YouTube by: INgrooves (on behalf of Emerald); EMI Music Publishing, Public Domain Compositions, BMG Rights Management (US), LLC, and 1 Music Rights Societies
