Suminagashi Failure: My First Attempt at Marbling Technique

After watching a couple of videos about Suminagashi, a Japanese marbling technique, all featuring hard-to-find products, I came across a video from ‪@auriabohn‬, where she used only water, inks, acrylics, dish soap, and alum to create incredibly marbled papers. If you're not familiar, alum is a mordant that helps to fix color. I decided to try Auria's approach without using alum and see how things would go. I have to admit that it was a complete failure. I was far from getting the amazing colors of Auria's papers, which made me realize how important alum is in this alternative approach. I also felt that the inks and papers used had a major role, even though I had tried to use very similar materials to the ones she suggested. I know I can improve my process without making it too complex by trying other materials and using alum. So I’ll make a second attempt and share the results with you in another video.
