“Scream My Name Like A Protest": R&B Music as BlackFem Technology of Humanity in the Age of #blacklivesmatter The recent prominence of #blacklivesmatter and the broader movement for Black lives has put pressure Black art and music to become more politicized in order to address the continued disregard of Black life by state and non-state institutions in the US and many other parts of the world. Not surprisingly, this politicization has most often taken the path of highlighting how the violence of white supremacy affects cishet Black male persons in the public sphere. Rather than hearing R&B as a retreat from the political, and building on Somali-Canadian singer, Amaal Nuux’s lyrics: “Everywhere but here is complicated… Scream my name like a protest,” my talk investigates how recent R&B artists have deployed this genre to center BlackFem interpersonal intimacy, interiority, and care.
