Adventures in Anthroposphic Education: How did you get way over there?

Our current 8th grade teacher, Charlie Orphanides presents: “How did you get way over there? The 9-year old awakening into selfhood, and the 12-year old stumbling toward adulthood.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is well documented that there is a recognizable change that occurs in all human beings around the age of 9, as well as a more subtle, yet no less profound, change around the age of 12. Rudolf Steiner spoke of both of these changes as times when the developing child “crosses the Rubicon” - meaning they have crossed a threshold from which there is no returning. We find the students at 9-years old awaken to themselves as separate and unique from the world around them, an experience that is often challenging, both for the child and the adults who care for them. A similar awakening occurs around the age of 12, but one that is more related to the inner life of the child, and therefore less noticeable by others. Through inquiry, curiosity and understanding, we can help our children through these challenging times, allowing them both the space to experience this necessary development to its fullest extent while also giving them the gift of our consistent love and understanding. And we might even grow in ourselves through the process!
