A main ingredient in Tamiflu is shikimic acid. You can find the shikimic acid in the seed pods of a sweet gum tree!! Yes, those prickly little balls have medicinal value!! Today I am making a tincture from them to have on hand for winter time flu, colds and other nasty viruses. All you need is green sweet gum balls and 100 proof vodka. Wash and soak the balls for at least 10 minutes. Let drain and completely dry. Put a few of them into a gallon sized freezer bad and pound with a hammer or the flat side of a meat mallet to smash them enough to break the outer shell of them. (If you don't you can not get all of the shikimic acid from the inside) Place them into a glass jar and cover with vodka. I use a sandwich bag and a jar ring to cover the jar. It can be difficult to remove the lid if you don't. Put the jar in a dark place and shake every few days. Let sit for 6-8 weeks until it turns brown. Strain the tincture thru a cheesecloth to get anything that may come off of the sweetgum balls out of it. When I feel like a wintertime illness is starting to strike, I take 1-2 TBSP of this 2-3 times a day and I am usually always better in 1-2 days. I store the tincture in a dark place.
