Narrated in reconstructed Ancient Greek, by Ioannis Stratakis ---------------------------- "Xenophon accompanied the Ten Thousand, a large army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger, who intended to seize the throne of Persia from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Though Cyrus' mixed army fought to a tactical victory at Cunaxa in Babylon (401 BC), Cyrus was killed, rendering the actions of the Greeks irrelevant and the expedition a failure. Stranded deep in Persia, the Spartan general Clearchus and the other Greek senior officers were then killed or captured by treachery on the part of the Persian satrap Tissaphernes. Xenophon, one of three remaining leaders elected by the soldiers, played an instrumental role in encouraging the 10,000 to march north across foodless deserts and snow-filled mountain passes, towards the Black Sea and the comparative security of its Greek shoreline cities. Now abandoned in northern Mesopotamia, without supplies other than what they could obtain by force or diplomacy, the 10,000 had to fight their way northwards through Corduene and Armenia, making ad hoc decisions about their leadership, tactics, provender and destiny, while the King's army and hostile natives barred their way and attacked their flanks." (Wikipedia) ---------------------------- Das Geschichtswerk ist um 370 v. Chr. entstanden und wurde 1540 erstmals ins Deutsche übersetzt. Es ist das bekannteste Werk des Xenophon, der es Plutarch zufolge zunächst unter dem Decknamen Themistogenes von Syrakus veröffentlichte. Allerdings besteht die Möglichkeit, dass ein gewisser Themistogenes tatsächlich ebenfalls ein ähnliches Werk wie Xenophon verfasst hat, das verloren gegangen ist (siehe Brill’s New Jacoby, Nr. 108). Kyros der Jüngere und Artaxerxes waren beide Söhne des persischen Großkönigs Dareios II. aus der Dynastie der Achämeniden. Nach Dareios’ Tod wurde Artaxerxes dessen Nachfolger und bestieg als Artaxerxes II. den Thron. Der ehrgeizige Kyros musste sich hingegen mit der Verwaltung Kleinasiens begnügen, wo er als Oberkommandeur fungierte. Schließlich plante Kyros einen Umsturz, sammelte dazu ein Heer, das vor allem aus griechischen Söldnern bestand, und marschierte im Frühjahr 401 v. Chr. gegen seinen Bruder. Traditionell (und geradezu sprichwörtlich) ist Xenophons Anabasis wegen ihres lupenreinen attischen Dialektes und ihrer durchsichtigen Sprache das erste Werk griechischer Literatur, das Schüler lesen. (Wikipedia) ------------------------------- En la aventura descrita por Jenofonte, aunque la expedición de Ciro el Joven es una anábasis desde Sardes, en la costa oriental del mar Egeo, hacia el interior de Persia, en su mayor parte la obra narra el viaje de regreso de los Diez Mil desde Mesopotamia hasta la costa del mar Negro. Por lo tanto, la expedición tiene más que ver con una catábasis que con una anábasis. Es probable que Anábasis fuera el título que dio a la obra Jenofonte cuando empezó el relato y siguiera conservándolo al prolongarse la ruta, que además de una anábasis y una catábasis sigue con una parábasis, o expedición por la costa hasta Tracia. El título alternativo, Expedición de los Diez Mil, tiene origen también en el mismo texto de la obra, donde se utiliza el término myriás, «miríada» o «diez mil», que era la unidad de cuenta utilizada por los ejércitos persas, y que Jenofonte emplea como equivalente a myríoi, también «diez mil» con el significado vago de «innumerables». Anche se l'armata dei mercenari fu vittoriosa nella battaglia sostenuta a Cunassa contro l'esercito dell'imperatore, Ciro non sopravvisse allo scontro, e la sua morte privò la spedizione di ogni senso: i Greci, penetrati troppo a fondo nel territorio nemico, dovettero così ritirarsi verso un porto sicuro, in un ripiegamento che si preannunciava lunghissimo e pieno di insidie. Il testo narra infatti di come il generale greco Clearco e una quantità di suoi ufficiali furono uccisi o catturati per il tradimento ordito da Tissaferne, e di come lo stesso Senofonte, ritrovatosi generale, lui che non si riteneva nemmeno soldato, abbia concentrato i propri sforzi nell'incoraggiamento dei soldati, guidando l'armata sbandata nel lungo viaggio, durato più di un anno, verso il "Ponto Eusino" (attuale Mar Nero). Fort de plus de 10 000 mercenaires grecs recrutés par ses hôtes hellènes, il affronte Artaxerxès II à la bataille de Counaxa, en Mésopotamie à une centaine de kilomètres de Babylone.
