Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813 – 1888) was a French-Jewish composer and virtuoso pianist. Some of his music requires extreme technical virtuosity, clearly reflecting his own abilities, often calling for great velocity, enormous leaps at speed, long stretches of fast repeated notes, and the maintenance of widely spaced contrapuntal lines. "Le Preux: Étude de Concert, Op. 17" (1844) is one of the most difficult masterpieces of Alkan's music. "Preux" is a French word that means knight or brave. The melody is somewhat humorous, so you may get the impression that it is like "Don Quixote". Enjoy the impressive coda. [NOTE] This piece does not have a specific tempo, so there are many interpretations by different pianists. Osamu N. Kanazawa plays at 7m00s, Laurent Martin plays at 7m45s, and Michael Nanasakov plays at 6m00s. I recorded it at the average time of 7 minutes. In the middle section, the left hand leaps and is connected by a huge arpeggio. Since Alkan was a master of the pedal piano, did he intend to use foot keys? Or did his imagination go beyond human limits? In any case, if it were possible, Alkan would have played at the same time. If he had three arms. Mr. Barbaro plays strongly with his left hand only. Mr. Seon-Yong Hwang uses his right hand to support the arpeggio. Please listen to it.
