We’re following breaking news in Summit County where Akron police confirm that five people — including several juveniles — were shot around 3 a.m. Monday, while at least 10 were struck or run over by fleeing vehicles during a "large gathering" in the Mason Community Learning Center parking lot. According to a release from the Akron Police Department, more than 100 people had gathered in the parking lot prior to the shooting. Some were drinking, others smoking marijuana, then the shots suddenly rang out. The rest was pure chaos. "Surveillance footage shows the large crowd running and taking cover as shots were fired. As people fled the area, multiple vehicles attempted to leave the parking lot at the same time. During this chaotic scene, several individuals were struck by gunfire, and many others were hit or run over by vehicles," Akron police noted in its release. Akron Police Lt. Michael Murphy tells 3News' Annabelle Childers that the victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Those hurt in the incident range in age from 14-21. Murphy points out that the number of injuries seems to keep growing. “This number has been rapidly changing, because not everyone that was injured stayed on scene. A lot of people left and went to the hospital on their own, to include hospitals outside of Akron. So we're working to gather information. We're in contact with all of the area hospitals trying to determine if new people have arrived," he said.
