What I recommend is to always copy and paste the actual job description into a separate word document. This allows you to highlight parts of it that are relevant and really take time to understand what the company is looking for. You don't have to have a separate word document for every job that you're applying to, but have one per month that has all of the jobs you have applied to in it. Make sure that when you copy and paste the job description into that document that it also contains the name of the company as well. Then go through with a highlighter in Word to find the key words that they're likely to use to pull resumes out of a database. They may use a specific software, a specific key words or background or experience that you would have that they would use to pluck their ideal candidate out of the database. Honestly, every time someone gives me their resume to review, and I ask to compare it with the job description, this is the biggest source of a disconnect between the two. They're not matching the resume with the job description. Do an audit of 3-4 of the job descriptions that you're applying to so you can write the resume once, and it will cover the concerns of multiple employers. Make sure that your resume includes accomplishments as well. If I am an employer and I'm comparing your resume with other people who have done a similar job at other companies, and their resumes include accomplishments, and yours does not, I will likely contact them first because they have demonstrated additional value to me.
