Since the 1970s Japan National Railways and later one of its successors JR Tokai have been experimenting with Maglev technology to bring faster train services. Maglev uses large super conducting magnets to propel a vehicle and can reach much faster speeds that conventional railways as the magnets cause the train to levitate thus eliminating friction. The Yamanashi test track was built to replace one in Miyazaki Prefecture (Kyushu) so that a longer route with tunnels and bridges could be used for testing. The test track was opened in 1997 and an extension was opened in 2013 bringing the total length of the track to 42.8km. It also will form part of the first long distance Maglev track, between Tokyo and Nagoya - the "Chuo Shinkansen" which is currently under construction with plans to open in 2027 (although this is likely to be delayed) and then will be further extended to Osaka. It will reduce the journey time between Tokyo and Nagoya from around 90 minutes to about 40~45 minutes. The Maglev train on the test track regularly hits and exceeds 500km/h (310 mph) can be seen travelling at these speeds from the Yamanashi Prefectural operated Maglev Eexhibition Centre near Otsuki in the prefecture.
