In this video, I recorded my ride from Central High School to my home in Crystal Lake, Illinois. The route includes W. Franklin Avenue and McHenry Avenue up to Barlina Road. As shown in the video, some sidewalks are completely cleared of snow, while others are still fully covered. According to Crystal Lake regulations, homeowners are responsible for removing snow from the sidewalks in front of their properties, but in many cases this does not happen. The snow often remains until it partially melts and then refreezes, turning into dangerous ice. Throughout the video, you can see footprints from pedestrians and tracks from bicycles, which shows that people are still using these sidewalks. Many students walk to Central High School during the winter, and many residents continue to walk their dogs or commute on foot despite the conditions. This situation creates a serious safety issue for both pedestrians and cyclists. When snow accumulation exceeds six inches, it becomes extremely difficult to travel safely — even with a fat tire bicycle. About one month ago, I personally fell while crossing the tunnel on Virginia Street, which highlights how dangerous these conditions can be. I would like to respectfully ask the Crystal Lake City Council why this issue is not being addressed more consistently. Safe and accessible sidewalks are essential, especially during the winter months, for students, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. #CrystalLakeIL #McHenryCounty #CentralHighSchool #IllinoisWinter #LocalIssues #SnowRemoval #WinterSafety #IcySidewalks #WinterCycling #PedestrianSafety #BikeSafety
