Welcome! Today I will be continue my eight month hardware restoration spree by restoring two shabby looking old ornate cast iron hinges manufactured by Sargent & Co. from the 1880s to the early 1900s. These iron hinges had 120 years worth of paint poorly slathered on them, so I started the restoration off with a lot of paint stripping. Surprisingly under all that paint the hinges were not too rusty, but that's okay - The less of a rusty restoration the easier haha. Anyway, I threw them in the rust remover for a day just to remove any small amounts of rust. After the rust removal, I moved onto sanding down the outrageously rough hinge pins. After they were all sanded I went ahead and gave them a quick polish with a coarse polish. This is because I want them to look like the original finish which wasn't a mirror polished surface. Then I moved onto painting them. Well no, technically I applied a tinted lacquer, which recreates a bronze plated look. Unlike in my previous hinge restoration video I decided not to copper plate these hinges, as they never were originally copper plated. Then I quickly blued the remaining bare steel parts. I don't know about you, but bluing steel is always overly satisfying to watch for me. With the pins blued and slightly lubricated (you wouldn't want a freshly restored squeaky hinge haha) It was time to restore the rest of the hardware. The hinges were carefully sanded to repair any damage from the last 120 years, while not removing any of the ornate details. With that hinge repair completed I moved onto painting the tinted lacquer on all four hinge halves. Then I painted the recessed areas black - This was done mainly because that is how they were originally finished. To finish off the restoration I of course reassembled the hinges. This didn't take long since there are so few components. While this wasn't the best of my restorations, and it isn't a perfect restoration (I wasn't as happy with the color of the tinted lacquer as with past restorations) looking at the before and after is a proper trash to treasure moment. These things were in such bad shape when I got them, so it's great to see them looking nice and new!
