Gospel of the day Monday 24 March 2025 Audio Gospel of the day in Italian with commentary by    / @frastefano   Liturgy of the Word of the day, from the Gospel according to Luke Glory to you, O Lord Lk 4,24-30 At that time, Jesus began to say in the synagogue in Nazareth: "Truly I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. But truly I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months and a severe famine came over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them, except to a widow in Zarephath in Sidon. And there were many lepers in Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. They rose up and drove him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him off the cliff. But he passed through their midst and went his way. The word of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ After speaking in the synagogue of Nazareth, Jesus is rejected by his own fellow citizens. And Jesus reminds us that, in times past, prophets were sent not only to Israel, but also to the Gentiles, thus arousing the indignation of all those who felt that their religiosity was being questioned. This reaction teaches us something important: we often reject those who call us to the truth, especially when it inconveniences us and calls us into question. How many times do we too, faced with a word of truth, instead of welcoming it, react with closure? It is easy to reject those who invite us to convert, because conversion implies change, and change is scary, it causes suffering. But if we close ourselves to these voices, we risk rejecting Christ himself, who continues to speak to us even through simple people, friends, communities, life events. At the same time, this passage reminds us that we too are called to be prophets in our time. Announcing the truth, however, has a cost: those who choose to say uncomfortable words, to call for justice, authentic love, coherence, are often rejected. But we must not be discouraged. A true prophet does not seek consensus, but to be faithful to what he feels in his heart. Let us ask for the grace to be prudent before pushing away those who speak to us in the name of the Lord, and to have the courage to be true witnesses of the Gospel, even when this makes us unpopular.
