Taking Full Control of Your Black & White Images | Affinity Photo Tutorial | Portrait Photography

Learn how to take full control of your black & white portrait images in Affinity Photo by using a method of editing which gives you far greater control than simply using a black & white adjustment layer. In fact, throughout the entire process of converting my colour images to black & white I do not use a black & white adjustment layer at all- instead I prefer to use a method which you may not be familiar with, which gives you far more control over how you final image will look. My method of converting my portrait images to black & white consists of 4 steps: Step 1 - Apply a gradient map Step 2 - Add a HSL adjustment layer underneath the gradient map Step 3 - Add a selective colour adjustment underneath the gradient map step 4 - Add a colour balance adjustment layer underneath the gradient map I use a gradient map which is pure black to pure white, which provides a gradual transition through the greyscale to both. By then working underneath this gradient map, no matter what adjustments I make to the colours they are projected on the scale of black to white by my gradient map. This method gives me incredible control over which parts of the image I can effect, edit, highlight or subdue. I have used this method for years now & I absolutely love the results it gives me. My portrait photograph editing workflow also differs from some portrait photographers I have seen, as even if I have decided I want an image to be black & white I will always create my colour edit first. Once my colour edit is complete I will then use this process to change that edit into black & white, maintaining the detail & control I need to make my images look fantastic. This editing style works really well with Affinity Photo but can also be applied to any other editing software you may use as a portrait photographer. The principles are exactly the same. This portrait of me was taken by myself in a home self-portrait session for a website uplift- the website is for the wedding videography part of my business, which is why I’m holding an old super 8mm camera. I used a Sony A7iii coupled with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8, which has proven to be a flexible & robust setup not only for my portrait work but for my wedding film work as well.
