Today in the shop I am building a spear shaft for a spear head that I was given. I am using historic specifications from the only spear shaft found which dates back to the period 825-950 AD. This was found in the Lendbreen ice patch in Norway in 1974. The spear head was super chunky and slightly bent. Previous to this video, I forged it back to straight, and ground it to clean up the bevels and thin out the blade. I am using a 6' long and 1 1/4" thick dowel as starting stock to create the spear shaft. I fit the socket to the end of the shaft, creating a step to seat the end of the socket. I then use a hand plane to taper the shaft from the socket gradually to the end, reducing the size from 1 1/4" down to 3/4". I finished by creating a rivet that mimics the original. It has a head that is bent over one way, only passing through one side of the socket of the spear head, into the wooden shaft. This design possibly allowed the rivet to be removed in the event of a broken spear shaft. Lastly, I am going over my Viking reenactment kit, including my clothing and accessories.
