Palaivana Roja a dubbed Tamil version of original Malayalam movie Gaddama, which is based on a true story, Kavya Madhavan plays Aswathi (Kavya Madhavan) is a lower-middle-class woman from a small village. After her husband, Radhakrishnan (Biju Menon), dies in a drowning accident, Aswathi is forced to become the sole breadwinner for her family. She travels to Saudi Arabia with the help of Usman (Suraj Venjaramoodu), a car driver from her village, to work as a domestic maid. Upon arrival, Aswathi is required to wear a burqa and is subjected to harsh, slavery-like working conditions. She endures physical and emotional abuse while working for a wealthy Arab family. Aswathi is accompanied by Usman, who actually brought her to all the miseries. However, he indulges in a affair with the Indonesian maid there and gets caught and he is kicked out of the sponsor's house. Aswathi helps the other maid to escape the premises and in turn is tortured as punishment. The film portrays her struggles as she sacrifices her personal well-being for her family’s survival, shedding light on the exploitation of migrant domestic workers in the Gulf. The Film story scripted by K. Girishkumar and Kamal based on a feature by K. U. Iqbal, published in Bhashaposhini, depicting the real–life incidents of a Kerala–born housemaid in Arabia.
