So, I might have been a little ambitious with my first punch needle rug… In anticipation of the highly anticipated Kiss a Shark Week (not to be confused with Discovery’s regular ol’ #sharkweek) I wanted to pay tribute to this kissable predator by making a punch needle shark rug! I started this project by buying a basic #punchneedle kit online. In addition to the punch needles and threaders, the punch needle kit also came with a small piece of fabric so I was able to do a little practice run, which didn't go too bad. If anything, I thought the process felt pretty simple and maybe that’s why I thought I could make a four-foot rug in a day or two! Since I wanted to make a larger punch needle #rug, I had to build a rig capable of holding it upright. After stretching the fabric onto a wood art frame, I was able to finagle two speaker stands and some scrap wood into a suitable rug making stand. Turns out, that was the easiest part since making a piece of punch needle rug art turned out to be a lot more time-consuming than I anticipated. Between the size of the rug and the amount of detail I attempted to include, making this #punchneedlerug by hand took well over a week of nonstop punch needling to complete. Being limited to certain yarn colors also felt a bit restricting. When I work with paint, I can mix up any color variations I want for my #art. This makes it easier to blend colors, shade, highlight, etc. So, that was definitely an obstacle when it came to rug making. If I were to do this again, some takeaways for me would be to avoid super fine details, use a tufting gun for larger rugs, and don't try to cram a 100-hour rug making project into a couple of days. I ended up spending all of Kiss a Shark Week and then some making this shark rug, so… I guess I'll have to celebrate next year! Happy Belated Kiss a Shark Week!
