Sensory Processing Disorders with Sally Burton-Hoyle, Ed.D; Professor, ASD Area, Department of Special Education, College Supports Program Faculty Advisor People with SPD have difficulty processing sensory information and responding appropriately to that information. SPD are associated with problems in adaptive behavior. Children and adults with sensory processing difficulties can experience impaired self-esteem, anxiety, depression, or aggression. When sensory disorders are looked at as noncompliance and bad behavior resulting in problems with social participation, self-regulation, and impaired skills for daily life tasks. When parents and schools have a better understanding of how SPD is impacting the student at school, those needs can be addressed.
