Authentic mortise and tenon joints require two processes: cutting the mortise and making the matching tenon. Each process can be done with just a router using a jig. I made a simple tenoning jig. Yet, it can be processed with paper-thin precision, allowing you to enjoy mortise and tenon joints. The jig is used on top of the mortising jig I shared last time. Three key features of the tenoning jig: 1. Simple structure yet high-precision processing. 2. Easily fine-tune the thickness and position of the tenon. 3. Combining the bit and template guide allows you to cut tenons of various sizes. It's very important to be able to easily fine-tune the thickness and position of the tenon. This is an essential feature because the position of the tenon is not always centered on the material, but is often offset. Also, since multiple tenons are always cut at the same time, it's important to be able to process them repeatedly with the same settings. With this jig, anyone can easily adjust it, allowing you to repeatedly cut tenons of the same dimensions. There is also a method called floating tenon for mortise and tenon joints. For DIY, I recommend using floating tenons as they are easier. In that case, you can cut it with just the mortising jig, so we designed this tenoning jig as an attachment that can be used by those who want to do serious mortise and tenon joints. Of course, there is a reason to use traditional mortise and tenon joints. It is a challenging technique. And it is fun just to get the dimensions of the tenons to fit perfectly. Please give it a try.
