Patch note below. Here is a simplified diagram describing how everything is connected together : https://drive.google.com/open?id=1i6q... As usual, the Digitakt is the center piece. It provides the drums, the bass and it sequences the Volca FM, the 0-Coast and the Ditto X4 with MIDI. There is also a tape loop running in the background, it's just a field recording of some rain in the forest. It's really low in the mix but I love it, makes me feel warm inside. The Volca FM is playing the chords in the intro. I've used my favorite Volca FM patch, it sounds like a lo-fi broken-Wurlitzer with a healthy dose of vibrato for extra-vibes. It's been a while since the Volca appeared on the channel but yo this thing is truly amazing, simply unbeatable for the price. At 1:54 I used the Transpose slider to move everything down an octave. This kind of feature is so useful for live-looping. At 2:12 I also turned on the built-in arpeggiator. I often set it to the fastest setting with the random mode, that way it transforms whatever chord you play into a glitchy burst of sparkles, so lovely. Nothing too crazy going on with the 0-Coast, which is playing the little melody in the intro. While it's amazing for experimentation, I feel like the 0-Coast is slightly underrated when it comes to "normal use". The envelope section sounds super organic and along with the portamento you can get some lovely mellow sounds. As you can see, I'm playing the Volca FM, the 0-Coast and the snare at the same time during the intro. The Keystep doesn't have a built-in keyboard split feature, so in theory it can only control one MIDI device at a time. THAT'S WHERE THE ALMIGHTY ZOIA COMES IN. The MIDI data is going through the ZOIA where it's spread across 3 channels. The left part of the keyboard controls the Volca FM, the right part controls the 0-Coast and the very last key on the right triggers the snare from the Digitakt. How cool is that? You could map every key to a different MIDI channel if you wanted to. And it uses a very small chunk of the ZOIA CPU, so you could still have a crazy chain of FX running in the same damn patch. The guitar is going through the DOD G7 which I've used for compression, the octaver (0:53) and the overdrive (3:15). The built-in effects sound a bit cheap but in a charming way. The guitar loops were recorded with the Ditto X4 which is controlled by the Digitakt, which starts and stops the recording of each loop in time and engages the Reverse effect of the Ditto at 2:15. Everything was recorded separately into my DAW where I added some reverb and the final fade-out. I mixed everything and mastered the result with Kramer MPX, Izotope Ozone and L3 Ultramaximizer. I also did a bit more editing than usual, especially on the first cycle of the drum beat. I struggled with the finger-drumming and had to adjust a few kicks. The subsequent cycles are partially quantized by the Digitakt so they sound fine. Anyway I hope you'll like it! This is one of my favorite jams in a while, everything just felt right for once. I've got another cool one coming next week by the wayyy, some peaceful minimalist hip-hop thingy. I'm currently locked down so if you want to hang out with me, you can meet me on Youtube every Friday at 5pm UK time for some new music. I'll do a premiere of my latest video where we can chat about whateverrr. I'm not sure how long I can keep up with that schedule but I guess we'll find out!
