Last September, when Water Tower was in the final days of a west coast tour, we each recorded a few solos using my new ETL mic in the golden hour outside our AirBnb. We were beginning to pack up and some folks had gone in when Tommy suggested I play a Phoebe Bridgers cover that I had been working up with him outside Alberta Street Pub in Portland. My friend and fantastic musician Eliza Petrosyan introduced me to Phoebe's music, and I had accompanied her on mandolin for the song at a show some months before. I wasn't sure I was ready to play it alone yet so I ran inside to blunderingly rehearse sections while someone else recorded! This was the first and only take and possibly my first solo run-through of the full song. Here I am playing a Gold Tone ML-1 "Missing Link" Baritone Banjo that they designed in collaboration with Bela Fleck. I had taken the feet and resonator off to give the banjo an old-time look and get a mellower sound for clawhammer playing. The audio is my Ear Trumpet Labs Myrtle and the X/Y capsule of the Zoom H8n, mixed by yours truly. Tommy filmed the video on his iPhone. Thank you for watching! Best, Jesse Here's a postscript to this video of Jesse Blue Eads playing a Phoebe Bridgers tune. In order to give this video some good tags, I'm going to mention some related stuff in this following sentence, including Funeral, Motion Sickness, Stranger in the Alps, You Missed My Heart, I Know the End, Ethan Gruska, Julien Baker, folk, Eliza Petrosyan, Jesse Blue Eads, Reuben, California, Tommy Drinkard and the Remedy, Water Tower, Bar Jay Bar, Gillian Welch, GemsOnVHS, Western AF, Jukebox Ghost, Willow Osborne, clawhammer old time banjo in D tuning open D but like way lower than that it's actually open G but in D position because it's a Gold Tone baritone banjo with dense strings. Old time FUSION bro. Jesse Blue Eads. Out.
