This is the first in a series of videos discussing the history of Japanese woodblock printing and HoMA's expansive collection of Japanese works on paper. "Premodern Publications: The Origins of Japanese Printmaking" is on view in the Robert F. Lange Gallery at the Honolulu Museum of Art from October 21, 2021–January 16, 2022. The rotation features the oldest examples of woodblock printing in our Japan collection, produced long before the emergence of the ukiyo-e movement in the late 17th century.
