The ninth day of August 2012 became a turning point in South Africa's mining sector. This is the day thousands of Lonmin mineworkers went against their union, and embarked on an unprotected strike, demanding R12 500. The strike would later turn violent, with 44 lives lost. It also attracted attention of the international community. A decade later, a question is asked if workers have united after that horrific incident, and are they allowed to peacefully co-exist with their unions? A labour expert says though the decade presented an opportunity for unions to improve their governance, that, has not yet been achieved. Itumeleng Kgajane and video journalist Jabu Oa-Africa take a look at the status quo in the mining sector. For more news, visit sabcnews.com and also #SABCNews on all Social Media platforms.
