This video, provided by the Dutch Safety Board, shows... actually, we think you can figure this one out. The regional bus in this video ran on compressed natural gas (CNG). While driving his normal route the bus driver saw smoke in his side mirror. At that point he notified the bus company (who in turn notified emergency services) and pulled over, parking the bus at the closest spot he deemed safe for disembarkation. The driver and passengers evacuated the bus and the driver went to the rear engine compartment with a handheld fire extinguisher but by that point the fire was too large to even approach. Shortly after the driver and passengers had evacuated the fire progressed from the engine compartment engulfing the bus's exterior and interior. As a result, the CNG tanks on the bus's roof heated to the point where their safety valves operated. The valves exist as a trade-off, understandably favoring a controlled venting of gas over explosion. Less understandable, however, was the direction the gas vented. According to the Dutch Safety Board the ensuing horizontal flames were 45' - 60' in length and the shooting flames lasted a total of four minutes. The Board didn't love the idea of a horizontal flamethrower, suggesting that if such an event were to occur in a narrow alleyway the consequences would have been significantly worse. A complete discussion of the event and how it occurred can be found in English at the following link:
