Renewed violence between Islamist and secular forces in Syria is raising urgent questions about the future of the ethnically and religiously diverse nation. Last week, forces linked to Syria’s new Sunni Islamist–leaning government attacked two Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Tens of thousands of Kurds were displaced and several people were killed. Tensions are high and a video showing pro-government fighters throwing the body of a female SDF fighter from a rooftop sparked widespread outrage. The episode has renewed doubts about whether these ideologically opposed groups can be integrated — and what shape a post-Assad political system might take. To break it all down, Rudaw’s Namo Abdulla talks to three leading Syria observers: Sirwan Kajjo, a US–based journalist; Megan Bodette, Director of Research at the Washington-based Kurdish Peace Institute, who recently returned from a visit to Syria; and Bassam Ishak of the SDF’s political mission in Washington. #podcast #Rudaw
