Around 1:57 PM on April 22, 2022, Officer James Perz with the Clearwater Police Department was working an extra detail in the church parking lot at 2930 CR 193. He was approached by a staff member at the Paul B. Stephen school across the street, and the staff member said it was likely that a drunk teacher had just passed them. They drove up the road, and they located a silver 2015 Hyundai slowly driving towards a landscaping trailer. He initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who was identified as Lauren. Lauren informed him that she was having a panic attack, but he observed indicators of impairment. Since he was on an extra duty assignment, he had to call for backup to take over the call. Officers Miller and Styles arrived on scene shortly afterwards and took over the DUI investigation. They asked the driver what was happening, and the driver told them that she was instructed to leave the school and that she was distraught. Lauren was asked to exit the vehicle to perform field sobriety exercises and she initially refused to exit the vehicle, but she eventually complied. Officer Karnes assisted in finding a suitable location to administer the field sobriety exercises. Officer Styles then started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Lauren did not touch heel-to-toe on each step, turned improperly, and took an incorrect number of steps. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Lauren failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete. Based on her erratic driving and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Lauren was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. She admitted to the officers that she had previously been arrested for DUI. A search of her vehicle incident to arrest yielded 6 bottles of vodka. While Lauren initially refused to submit breath samples, she later agreed to do so and the officers told her that she would be transported to the Clearwater Police Department. Once they arrived at the Clearwater Police Department, Lauren submitted breath samples for testing. Her breathalyzer results indicated BAC levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, which were nearly 4 times the legal limit of 0.08%. Officer Styles cited Lauren for DUI (316.193). She was subsequently transferred into the custody of Allied Prisoner Transport and taken to the Pinellas County Jail. ---------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
