Cytoplasm refers to the fluid that fills the cell, which includes cytosol along with filament, proteins, ions and macromolecular structures. In eukaryotic cell cytoplasm refers to the content of the cell with the exception of the nucleus. For prokaryotic cells since they do not have the defined nuclear membrane, the cytoplasm also contain the cells primary genetic material. In general cytoplasm refers to the region between the nuclear membrane and plasma membrane, and when we add nucleus in cytoplasm the term protoplasm generates. Cytoplasm contains cytoskeleton with its associated motor proteins, Organelles, Cytoplasmic inclusion and cytosol. The basic shape of cell is provided by its cytoskeleton and it is made up of microfilament, microtubule and intermediate filament. Cytoplassmic inclusion includes wide range of biochemicals from a small crystals of protein to pigments ( melanin) Carbohydrates and lipids ( fats). Functions of Cytoplasm; Cytoplasm is the site for most of enzymatic activities and metabolic processes for example glycolysis, Cytoplasm act as store house for bio-molecules e.g Amino-acid, sugar, Nucleotides etc, most protein are synthesised in cytoplasm, cytoplasm give shape, strength and support to cell through cytoskeleton and it provide suitable environment for organelles to function properly.
