This kimono DIY does require at least a basic level of sewing knowledge. While I will be making a kimono for men, the pattern functions the same way for both male and female designs. Regardless of whether you sew a kimono for a man or woman, you can still follow along. I will tell you where to sew things differently depending on the gender. The Japanese kimono is cut out at the same size regardless, but your stitching lines and seams will be different. I don't usually cover cutting instructions in my sew alongs, but to sew a kimono robe with the fockwear 113 pattern, I felt it necessary. You can see me sew a kimono collar with the required alterations, and also the height changes I will make during the cutting process. Since you have to make a few alterations prior to sewing, I felt that this time I would cover the cutting. Is Sewing a Kimono Easy? There isn't a clear answer to this because a lot of that depends on what you want to do. Sewing a kimono robe isn't very hard. However if you want to do the hand-stitching to create an authentic Yukata as I am here, it will take you much longer than many types of dresses. When I decided to do this Japanese kimono DIY, I knew what I was getting into. I had already sewn this pattern once. Just be prepared before you begin by knowing that though easy, it is not a fast project. Don't feel down! My favorite sewing projects have been the ones that have taken me the longest to complete.
