The END of the age of the train? 1968 all over again? Riding in the FINAL HST 16.27pm from Plymouth to Leeds 18/09/23. The culmination of a last minute 7 day All Line Rover ticket trip seeing out the final days of the Intercity 125. Powercars 43007 & 43008 in their Retro liveries take us along the route passing I would estimate to be around 3000 plus people out to see the final timetabled working mainly on the stations which I film a few of later on the route. On arrival to Leeds just before midnight the driver obliged in letting everyone cab the powercar and initially blow the horns which I’m sure woke up a few Leeds residents! A great last trip meeting many great folk along the route. In the final week as well as this last trip we’ve traveled on the whole route all the way from Plymouth upto Glasgow and had a wonderful time riding in the luxurious surroundings of the Mk3. (bar arriving in Glasgow last Tuesday with no planned accommodation and the whole city being booked out due to a football match!) It might be 40 years since these trains were made but nothing comes close to replacing them in terms of comfort and our country will sadly be much worse off without them. They were a joy to travel on and unfortunately an over crowded 5 car voyager from Scotland to Cornwall simply won’t have the same appeal. I’m my view we need comfortable trains with extra capacity running to entice people into them not trains so full you can’t get a seat. The route from Paddington to Plymouth which used to be great on a HST is now a shambles with overcrowded class 800s, windows that don’t line up with the seats and if you manage to get a seat the design isn’t suitable for long distance travel so many people would rather drive. Sadly the age of the train may be at an end if we can’t sort this mess out. On the plus side some examples are being saved for use on charter trains and that is where we can still remind ourselves of what enjoyable travel used to be like! I also still have my Hornby 125 I got in in the late 80’s so we can relive it in OO scale! Don’t be sad it’s over though, be glad you enjoyed them while they were here.
