They usually occur as tangles of abnormal blood vessels, especially in the central nervous system. While a high percentage of arteriovenous malformations are already present at birth, the cause of AVMs are not fully understood yet and they are rarely passed down among families. Arteriovenous malformations are dangerous because they may not cause any signs or Symptoms for a long time and are often detected after rupturin and bleeding in the brain. Other signs include headaches, seizures - meaning abnormal electric activvity of the brain that may lead to parts of the Body shaking, People behaving strangely or passing out. They can cause strokes - meaning a part of the brain is injured because it does not receive blood for a prolonged period, or because o bleeding in a part of the brain. Strokes can be recognized by signs like weakness or numbness in arms or legs, a side of a person's face to look uneven or drop to one side or Trouble speaking. Most of these symptoms are very unspecific and it is recommended that the Patient sees a doctor for further diagnosis. Radiologic Imaging using CT Scans, MRIs ad / or cerebral angiography are performed. Cerebral angriograpy is done to visualze how blood flows through the vessels of the brain, usually by inserting a tube in a large blood vessel as in the leg and applying a dye while taking X-ray Images. The Treatment of arterio venous malformations is dependent of different factors, like whether the malformation is bleeding or not, its Location within the Brian and its size. Treatment Options include surgery to remove the AVM, Radiosurgery meaning getting high doses of X-ray Radiation to the area of the AVM making it less likely to bleed. Embolization through cerebral angiography by blocking the vessel is another Option. This can be done combined with surgery or radiosurgery.
