Translating the main theme song (片頭曲) "Humanity's Fault" (人類的錯) from the Born to be a King 1987 (大明群英 ) into English. Original Cantonese Song by Michael Kwan (關正傑). "Born to be a King" is an 18 episode series staring the handsome Simon Yam (任達華) who was at the height of his popularity. He plays a young Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋). The story takes you through the character's origins from a poor peasant, to monk, to mountain robber, to solider, to general, to king and to his death. But I have to say that TVB chose a very poor plot and Zhu Yuanzhang is depicted as a pretty horrible and not a very likable person. Making this series a hard watch because you couldn't really support him fully. Not even the great acting of Simon Yam could overcome a terrible script. Sean Lau played his main rival Chen Youliang (陳友諒). He was depicted as an equally unlikable character. Always scheming to gain power. The series was barely watchable when Simon and Sean were contesting for power. The final four episodes which features the four sons of Simon's character were fighting for the throne was as exciting as watching the paint dry. More schemes and more evil people... Wong Yee Kam (王绮琴) played the main love interest that both main characters were fighting over. Whilst she looked pretty in a wuxia costume, her character was snobby and as smart as a block of wood. I didn't like her character one bit. She hated Simon's character for no reason, and fell for Sean's character who was clearly only using her. This is despite the fact that Sean's character had a role to play in her father's death so he could gain power over the realm. Later, her plan to get revenge on Simon for killing Sean is to poison Simon's eldest child 20 years later when she had become a concubine. This led to her death and the death of hers and Sean's son. Killing off the bloodline. The smarter play was to make her son succeed the throne and keep alive the bloodline. But like I said, a block of wood... Finally, the only likable character in the entire series was played by Money Chan (陈敏儿). She liked Simon when he was a nobody and stuck with him through thick and thin, even allowing him to have concubines... Other notable members of the cast includes Bobby Au Yeung (歐陽震華), Stella Wong (王敏明), and Carrie Ng (吳家麗). Final thing to mention is that Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健) had a cameo in this series. He featured in a battle scene before being killed by four arrows. The eldest prince sure looks like Leon Lai (黎明). The main theme song "Humanity's Fault" was another classic 1980's wuxia song sung by Michael Kwan. Though there wasn't enough action in the series to cut a clip which does the song justice.
