MLS.Lion dance (2 shots) 1.11 Background: President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam officially began his second term of office in Saigon, Apr 29, following his re-election by an overwhelming majority on Apr 9 despite reported attempts by terrorists to interfere with the voting. Accompanied by the re-elected Vice-President and by Cabinet Ministers, President Diem went to the National Assembly building, where he took the oath of office on a specially erected dais draped in red and yellow silk, the national colours. Addressing the crowds, the President said: "The many courageous votes cast for me are not so much a reason for personal satisfaction as a challenge to follow the difficult path of the national and historic struggle against underdevelopment and imperialism, especially Communist imperialism." After his speech, President Diem lit a flame of remembrance and laid a wreath at the city's memorial dedicated to those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom. To round off the day's ceremonies - a fly-past of Vietnamese Air Force planes and a procession of floats through the streets of Saigon. 05/03/1961 Miền Nam Việt Nam: Sài Gòn: Tổng Thống Diệm Bắt Đầu Nhiệm Kỳ Thứ Hai. Bối cảnh: Tổng Thống Ngô Đình Diệm của miền Nam Việt Nam chính thức bắt đầu nhiệm kỳ thứ hai tại Sài Gòn, ngày 29 tháng 4, sau khi ông tái đắc cử với đa số áp đảo vào ngày 9 tháng 4 bất chấp những nỗ lực được báo cáo của những kẻ khủng bố nhằm can thiệp vào cuộc bỏ phiếu. Cùng với Phó Tổng Thống tái đắc cử và các Bộ Trưởng Nội Các, Tổng Thống Diệm đến tòa nhà Quốc Hội, tại đây ông tuyên thệ nhậm chức trên một chiếc bục được dựng đặc biệt phủ lụa đỏ và vàng, hai màu quốc gia. Phát biểu trước đám đông, Tổng Thống nói: "Nhiều lá phiếu dũng cảm đã bầu cho tôi không phải là lý do để thỏa mãn cá nhân mà là một thách thức để đi theo con đường khó khăn của cuộc đấu tranh lịch sử và dân tộc chống lại tình trạng kém phát triển và chủ nghĩa đế quốc, đặc biệt là chủ nghĩa đế quốc Cộng Sản." Sau bài phát biểu của mình, Tổng Thống Diệm đã thắp ngọn lửa tưởng niệm và đặt vòng hoa tại đài tưởng niệm của thành phố dành cho những người đã hy sinh trong cuộc đấu tranh cho tự do.
