Breast conservation is defined as removing a cancer while preserving the breast, also referred to as lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. Breast conservation is safe when patients can have their cancer removed with clear margins. Relative to survival, the outcomes from breast conservation are similar to mastectomy. The other option for surgery is a mastectomy. There are medical indications for mastectomy, as in cases of patients who either have cancer in multiple locations within the same breast, or in individuals who completed genetic testing and were identified as having an excessively high risk of future or subsequent breast cancers.
