The whole story; How Independence Inyo County, got it's name and why. Coming to the Eastern Sierra, Owens River Valley, is like being at an outdoor wonderland. People come from all over the world to experience the fishing, hunting, rock climbing, back packing, stunning views, apparent freedom and more. Or, if the visit is to the Lone Pine Alabama Hills, it is to see the actual movie filming locations turned into Hollywood silver screen magic, creating, kind of a romantic realism, which shapes the “G” rated version of how the west was won, back in the day. For the new or casual recreation visitor, what is seen is a giftwrapped reality that is far from the ugly hardships of the European pioneers and the indigenous people of this valley which if filmed would be rated “R”. So I will tell you a little about this place you won’t find in some picture show. You would have to dig deep in research and be interested to really get a sense of the sorrow that is part of the fabric of this valley. Charles Putnam built a stone cabin along Little Pine Creek. The trading post he established there, is acknowledged as the beginning of what would become the town of Independence. But where did the name "Independence" come from? That story, too, has a natural progression.
