Having peripheral arterial occlusive disease or intermittent claudication means to have clotted arteries in the legs. That means that it hurts to walk. People who have it stop regularly and wait until the pain vanishes. To widen the arteries to ensure a normal, healthy bloodstream a surgical procedure is needed. This is done by inserting a stent. But there is another treatment option: a coated balloon catheter carrying a drug. This method was developed by doctors of PGD International and was just introduced recently. In the video made by journalists of the local TV-station RBB you can see the catheter. Also Dr. Michael Werk, Chief Medical Officer, Radiologist and Head of study of drug-eluting balloon dilatation PAOD, introduces the audience to the topic. He points out that this invention was made in Berlin, although most medical inventions come from the U.S.. The report describes the ordeals of Wolfgang Arnold, who has PAOD and whose last resort was treatment with the balloon catheter.
