Fanconi Syndrome is a defect in the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) of the kidney. The Proximal convoluted tubule is the first segemnt of the nephron "just distal to the Bownan's capsule” The PCT is responsible for reabsorption of the majority of sodium (Na), water (H2O) and other electrolytes. PCT also plays a role in acid-base regulation by secreting acid in urine at the luminal border through the sodium-hydrogen exchanger (NHE) which is a secondary active transport. A defective PCT will lead to type-2 (proximal) renal tubular acidosis (RTA); normal anion gap metabolic acidosis (NAGMA).
