Jesus Saves! Matthew 14:22-31 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. (23) And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. (24) But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. (25) And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. (26) And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. (27) But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. (28) And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. (29) And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. (30) But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. (31) And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? Main Idea: Jesus is ready to save us from our sinking situation. Jesus, after hearing of John the Baptist's beheading, withdrew to a desert place. Yet the crowds followed, and moved with compassion, He healed their sick and miraculously fed about 5,000 men with five loaves and two fish. After this, He sent the disciples ahead by boat while He prayed alone on the mountain. In the night, amid contrary winds and tossing waves, Jesus came to them—walking on the sea—displaying His deity (cf. Job 9:8) and sovereignty over creation. The disciples obeyed and pressed on despite the storm, not turning back. The focus then shifts to Peter and Jesus. From this, we see two key truths: 1. Worldly distractions will sink us Peter began strong in faith: at Jesus' word "Come," he stepped out of the boat and walked on water toward the Lord. But when he shifted his gaze to the boisterous wind, fear took over—he feared the storm more than the One who rules it—and he began to sink. How often are we like Peter? We start on fire for Christ, but worldly comforts, pursuits, or storms distract us. Like Demas (2 Timothy 4:10), who loved this present world and forsook Paul, we can shift our affection from Jesus to fleeting things, chasing winds in vanity.Dear brothers and sisters, let us pray daily that God reminds us of the gospel. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace. (From the hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" by Helen H. Lemmel) 2. Jesus will save us As Peter sank, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" He didn't try to swim back or save himself—he knew salvation came only from calling on Jesus.Romans 10:13 declares: "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."To any unbeliever sinking in sin today: I beseech you, for Christ's sake and your soul's sake, call on the name of the Lord! Come to Christ! As George Whitefield urged in his sermons: "Come, all you liars; Come, all you Pharisees; Come, all you fornicators, adulterers, swearers, and blasphemers. Come to Christ, and He will take away all your filth... Come! Come, my guilty brethren: I beseech you for Christ’s sake, and for your soul’s sake, come to Christ!" Jesus' response? "Immediately" He stretched out His hand and caught Peter. No delay—unlike even the fastest emergency services (e.g., SA Health's 8-minute priority response). Jesus Himself holds us firmly; even if we slip, we won't fall. His salvation is immediate and secure. That man who once drifted? By God's grace and Word, he saw sin's sinfulness, laid his guilt at the cross, and found great mercy, free grace, multiplied pardon, and liberty at Calvary. We were once sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, stained within, sinking to rise no more. But the Master of the sea heard our despairing cry, lifted us—now safe are we! I was sinking deep in sin, Far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, Sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea Heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me— Now safe am I. Refrain: Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. (From the hymn "Love Lifted Me" by James Rowe) Let us remember who Jesus is and what He has done. Our sins—not in part but the whole—were nailed to His cross; we bear them no more. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! (From "It Is Well with My Soul" by Horatio G. Spafford) If you've lost focus, call on Him today—there is no place His hand cannot reach. Your sins may be great, but His mercy is more. Jesus is ready to save you from your sinking situation. Jesus saves! Call upon Him today.
