Hong Kong Security Law: What is it and why is it so controversial?

China has passed a controversial national security law that gives Beijing sweeping new powers over the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong. The Chinese government says the law is needed to curb unrest and uphold mainland sovereignty while critics and those behind Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement say it marks the end of the city’s civil and political freedoms. The new law prohibits what China describes broadly as secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign countries, with up to life in prison for offenders. The security law on Hong Kong has spurred a wave of criticism and international outcry, including from leaders of the European Union, Taiwan, Canada and the United States who say the law could lead to Chinese government interference and infringements on freedoms.
