Women & Gender in Ancient Egypt: The Stela of Maya

In this video, undergraduate students from UCSC's spring quarter 2020 course 'Women & Gender in Ancient Egypt' explore the significance of one object from the Pharaonic Period (3000-332 BCE) for understanding gender in ancient Egypt. Videos offer background on gendered rules of presentation in Egyptian art, the historic and/or archaeological context of the object, an explanatory description of the key elements of the artifact, and a comparative object or work of art that helps us understand the gendered significance of this object more fully. A bibliography of sources and images used by the students in creating these videos is provided at the end, so those interested in learning more can read further. UCSC students researched, wrote, and edited these videos to provide additional online resources to students and the public on gender issues during the COVID-19 related closing of many schools and museums. Their professor was Dr. Elaine Sullivan.
